Behavior Management is the use of programs and procedures based on principles of behavior to decrease socially unacceptable behaviors (problem behaviors) and increase socially desirable behaviors at home in schools or in any other educational institutes.
It is commonly used for typical as well as atypical children like those with ADHD, ASD and other developmental disorders. Behavioral interventions to treat problem behaviors typically involve manipulation of environmental events or conditions with the intended results that the problem behavior is eliminated, or atleast reduced. The strategies used in behavioral management depend upon the ABCs of Applied Behavior Analysis, where A stands for antecedents ( factors triggering the behavior), B stands for behavior itself and C stands for consequence( reactions of the individuals around ). It also depends upon the function of the behavior which could be attention, escape or sensory seeking.
For example, the behavioral management techniques most commonly used are Reinforcement, Manding techniques, Modeling, Social stories, Verbal cues, Visual cues, Promoting Sensory enriched environment, and Time out.
