Handwriting difficulties
School is the first place to notice handwriting difficulty of the child. Teacher typically complains child’s handwriting not being able to read. Parent may find child’s notebook and calendar full in red pen.
Child with handwriting difficulty generally avoids writing as they may experience fatigue in completing the task. They may have problems like buttoning, zipping dresses, cutting paper with scissor, tying shoe lace and alike in daily routine. Academically, child may write with poor spacing of words, they may write with too low or too much pressure make words not able to read at all or breaks pencil tip often respectively. Typically, child complains of not being able to complete copying from the board due to slow speed in writing.
There may be a presentation of reversals pattern in the notebook.(b:d,w:m ,p:q),Omission of letter/words, mirror images(upside down or left right malalignment).
Occupational therapy helps find and treat the major contributing factor to the concerned problem in terms of improving physical energy, eye hand coordination, doing fine activities ,copy skills etc.
